Real, lasting change often starts with honest conversation. That’s exactly what took place recently when Senior Chief Melda Achieng Amwata convened community members for a wide-ranging dialogue led by TumainiAction CEO David Slaid and Board Member Adv. Kevin Reinhart.

A Conversation With Many Threads

Rather than focusing on a single issue, the gathering wove together several topics that touch nearly every household in the community:

  • Youth mentorship — guiding young people toward positive role models and brighter futures
  • Addiction awareness — building understanding of substance use and pathways to recovery
  • Mental wellness — opening space to talk about mental health without stigma
  • Financial literacy — equipping community members with practical money management skills
  • Widows’ land rights — raising awareness of the legal protections in place to safeguard widows from land dispossession

Each topic stands on its own, but together they painted a fuller picture of what it takes for a community to thrive  socially, emotionally, and economically.

The Power of Convening

Senior Chief Amwata’s role in bringing the community together was central to the day’s success. When trusted local leadership opens the door, people show up ready to listen and engage. That trust, combined with Tumaini Action’s expertise across mental health, youth development, and rights-based advocacy, created a space where difficult topics could be discussed openly and constructively.

Why Widows’ Land Rights Matter

Among the conversations held, the discussion on widows’ land rights stood out as a critical justice issue. In many communities, widows face the threat of losing land and property after the death of a spouse  a reality that can push families into poverty and instability. Raising awareness of legal protections is a vital step toward ensuring widows and their children are not left vulnerable.

Knowledge as Empowerment

At the heart of this gathering was a simple but powerful idea: informed communities are empowered communities. Whether it’s a young person learning about mentorship opportunities, a family understanding the basics of financial planning, or a widow learning her legal rights, knowledge shared in community is knowledge that protects and uplifts.

Looking Ahead

Tumaini Action is grateful to Senior Chief Melda Achieng Amwata for convening this important dialogue, and to Adv. Kevin Reinhart for lending his expertise to the conversation. We remain committed to continuing this work  bringing knowledge, dialogue, and support directly to the communities who need it most.
